Le monastère, aujourd'hui en ruines, est situé sur une colline, le Mont Admirable, dominant l'embouchure de l'Oronte à 550 m d'altitude. Il a été construit par les disciples de saint Siméon Stylite le Jeune, né à Antioche (aujourd'hui Hatay ou Antakya) au VIe siècle, un prêtre chrétien de confession chalcédonienne.

The monastery, now in ruins, is located on a hill, Mount Admirable, overlooking the mouth of the Orontes at 550 m altitude. It was built by the disciples of St. Simeon Stylite the Younger, born in Antioch (now Hatay or Antakya) in the sixth century, a Christian priest of Chalcedonian faith.

La Turquie va très prochainement mettre en eau le barrage d'Ilisu, faisant disparaitre de larges pans d'histoire sous les eaux du Tigre. De l'habitat troglodyte préhistorique aux monuments du Môyen âge, Hasankeyf a en effet abrité de nombreuses civilisations au cours des âges dans cette partie de la Méspotamie.

Turkey will soon put the Ilisu dam into water, making large swathes of history disappear under the waters of the Tigris. From the prehistoric troglodyte habitat to the monuments of the Môyen age, Hasankeyf has indeed sheltered many civilizations over the ages in this part of Mesopotamia.
